American Sexy is a new play about how our over-sexed world is changing our definitions of relationships in the flesh. How does face-time change as we interact more and more as voices, text fragments, and images? Our intrinsic need to compete can push us to great limits, but what happens when the goals are emotional?
Our story is set during spring break, as we follow Andy on a road trip to Vegas. Two girls and a guy tag along on what is supposed to be a carefree fling before finals. But a detour to the Grand Canyon reveals depths that none of them are prepared for, as trusts are broken and relationships are pushed to their edge. |

Killer Smile is a dark comedy about the difference between our pleasant social façade and the potential for spite that lies underneath. What does it take to crack through the surface and reveal the hate and hostility we keep buried inside?
The setting is a surprise birthday party for Sam – friend to all, enemy to none. As the guests must wait for the birthday girl, they slowly become agitated and distrust begins to permeate the room. Where is she? Who was responsible for her arrival? Will Sam show up before they turn on each other or will the spiteful, vicious person we try not to be reveal itself from behind the smile? |

Often comedy and mostly realistic, How to Cheat explores the lives of two affluent outsiders as they tumble into bed together against their better judgment. Are we really entitled to the “pursuit of happiness” even when we hurt others? In a world where so many people live in such strange and often tragic circumstances, is our highest purpose to find our pleasure? Or, when two people come together can they create something larger than themselves?
The play arose from conversations between director Brian Balcom and author Alan Berks about whether, in these times, artists can create work about happiness that creates happiness in the audience without feeling shallowly ignorant of world events. When Emily Gunyou and Randy Reyes were asked to join the cast, the play was written specifically to stretch and play with their strengths and interests. (In the recent past, Emily and Alan collaborated on Almost Exactly Like Us at Gremlin Theatre; Randy and Alan have collaborated at Thirst Theater.) How to Cheat mixes witty dialogue, physical comedy, dancing, and unexpected plot twists, into a story about happiness and lust with a dash of redemption. |
